Generation Joy Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, also referred to as GenJoy.
The idea of "kids helping kids" began seven years ago on a personal trip to Ghana. This idea continued within the Beaver Lake Middle School and community. In recent years we have had six different educators from BLMS fly over to aid in the distribution of the items. Each ensuing year, photos of the actual items being placed in the hands of children are shared with our students and the process is repeated.
The six person travel team departed from Seattle on July 10th and landed in Johannesburg 24 hours later. After spending a few days acclimating to the new time zone in Pretoria and the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, they headed to the rural towns of Underberg and Himeville in the KwaZulu ‐Natal Province of South Africa. The team visited and placed school supplies in the hands of more than 6000 students in 32 schools, traveling a total of 1,650 miles to reach some of the most remote schools in the area.
Generation Joy Foundation was founded to focus on the mission of "kids helping kids". Non profit status allows GenJoy to raise funds outside the school to aid in the shipping of supplies, pay for fuel in the delivery, and purchase needed items that were not collected during the drive. Future goals include offering scholarships to rural South African students, expanding the number of students traveling to South Africa in the future, increasing the area we serve, and perhaps some day bringing South African students and teachers here to visit our community.
