Sawubona for the last time everyone ~
I’m back home and now that my sleep cycle has evened out again I’ve had some time to reflect on this trip.
First and most importantly I want to give a huge thank you to everyone that made this trip possible and for all the support that I’ve had in this adventure. Specifically my loving parents and Linda Guard for all the excitement they’ve shown (even if I was worried J). Also, my love and thanks go out to the Pierre, Jacqui, Liam and Erin and my new friends in South Africa for opening their hearts and homes to us crazy foreigners. And last but not least Curtis, who deals with us every year and all year round. Just thank you for this opportunity to look up from my computer screen and see the world outside.
Secondly, looking back on the beginning of this trip (which feels like forever ago) I just cannot believe how far I’ve come in understanding others. On many heartbreaking adverts or charities you just see the problem and you throw money at it (which is helpful in it own way, don’t get me wrong); but meeting the people and putting names and faces to the problem gives everything a brand new facet and makes everything more real that sometimes is comfortable.
But more importantly, seeing not only the problem, but being part of the solution and knowing that there is a solution out there that people are willing to invest time and effort into. It fills me hope that there are really good people out there. It’s easy to get lost in the problem and lose hope because of all the pain in the world, but this trip has shown me the flip side of the coin.
South Africa is a beautiful country, filled with beautiful people and culture but it’s easy to forget about that; so all I urge of you if nothing else is to never forget that although there are problems and evils in the world, there will always be real people behind those problems and they are filled with hope and faith. These people are living their lives the same way we are and they are humans that should be treated as such. We all look up at the same stars and have the same body temperature and we all deserve to be treated the same.
Never forget that just because there is a problem that doesn’t mean there isn’t hope.
